Should You Use Charcoal For Your Gas Grills?

The popularity of charcoal grills

The debate between charcoal and gas grilling is not new. In fact, the answer to this argument seems to have been settled already. Serious grillers have always preferred using charcoal over gas BBQ grills. Food grilled over charcoal produces a distinct flavor and aroma while food grilled on a gas grill does not. Charcoal grills are often more portable as compared to their gas counterparts which are heavier in general. Aside from that, charcoal grills are less expensive than gas BBQ grills.

What about gas grills?

One of the gas grill's advantages is that it lights up and heats up almost immediately. You also don't need to be a serious griller in order to operate the thing. Less smoke is also emitted when you're using a gas bbq grill. This makes gas bbq grilling convenient but in spite of this, many people still prefer charcoal-grilled food with all its benefits.

All in all, the charcoal grill wins points for authenticity, taste, space, portability and cost. Take that, gas bbq grill!

Wait, you already bought a gas grill?

Is there any way I can convert my grill into a charcoal grill?

You don't need to suffer buyer's remorse as you eat your tasteless, odorless grilled barbecue. As a matter of fact, you can have the best of both worlds. You can have the advantages of both gas grilling and charcoal grilling using your own gas grill. All you have to do is follow these steps:

But first, you will need a gas grill, gloves to handle charcoal, a wrench to remove gas grill components, a wire grill brush to clean the grill, a bag of charcoal briquettes, a charcoal poker to handle hot coals, newspaper, matches, and the food you will be grilling.

1. Remove the gas component of the grill
Turn off and remove the propane tank, or gas tank, and the gas hose or tube. You might need the help of a wrench to remove the components. This is to avoid fire or explosion when you light up the charcoal.

2. Lift out the grid, burners and metal tubes
The grid, also called grill rack, is the part of the gas grill wherein you cook your meat and vegetables. This covers the lower part of the grill. Remove it so that you can have access to the lower part. After lifting out the grill rack, remove the burners and metal tubes. You may again need the help of your trusty wrench to remove these parts.

3. Clean out food scraps and grease
Using a sturdy-bristle wire grill brush, clean out all the food scraps and grease around the grill. Clean the inside of the grill, the lid and the grill rack. This is important to avoid fire or explosion when charcoal is used.

4. Scatter paper around the bottom
Once the insides of the grill are clean, crumple pieces of paper, preferably newspaper and scatter them around the base. This will help the charcoal catch fire.

5. Stack and light up charcoal in the bottom
Fill the grill to an inch within its ream with charcoal briquettes. Light the newspaper and charcoal up through the open slot using some matches. Blow on the embers to keep the flame burning.

6. Let it heat up for around 10 minutes
Let the charcoal heat up for around ten minutes, until the embers die down a little. You will notice a thin layer of ash coating the charcoal briquettes. Use a charcoal poker to spread the charcoal evenly around the bottom of the grill. Add another layer of charcoal briquettes to cover the older layer. From the older layer, get some pieces of burning coals and add it on top of the cooler briquettes. Let it ignite. This will help extend the time range of the heat.

7. Replace the grid and cook!
Before you replace the grid or grill rack, make sure it's clean. You can now cook your meat and vegetables over your new charcoal grill. You can monitor whether the heat is just right by placing your hand over the grill. The heat is just right if you cannot place your hand over it for more than three seconds. If you notice the temperature dropping and the old charcoal briquettes turning to ash, simply add new coals.

Once you're sure about the amount of heat, cover the grill to seal the charcoal flavor in your food. Now you can enjoy charcoal-grilled food anytime!

Review of The Weber Q 200 Portable Propane Grill

Portable Gas Grills - A Hassle Free BBQ

With Summer in full thrust, it's time to hit the beach, the parks, the rivers or the camping sites. Wherever you go, life can be so much more wonderful if you take a portable grill with you.

This is especially true if it is a portable gas grill. No need to wait a long time until those coals get hot enough, no need to stand over the grill fanning the flame. With a gas grill it's so much simpler - ignite, and let the burners work their magic. The TTB - Time To Burger (between unloading the grill from your car to the first burger you eat) - has never been shorter.

With so many different types of grills out there, choosing the one that will be the best fit for you is not an easy task. This article tries to help you with that.

Introducing: Weber Q 200, Portable Propane Grill

The Weber Q200 is a portable propane (gas) barbecue made with outdoor grilling in mind. It is a hybrid grill that works great for everyday cooking at home, as well as outdoors excursions. The Q200 has a five years limited warranty, which you are not likely to use.

Assembly - Will I Be Able To Do It?

Yes. Even if you're one of these people who can never get anything right - you'll be fine with the Q 200. The grill is delivered to your door almost fully assembled. There are only two things you'll need to do. Are you sitting down?

The first thing you'll have to do is attach the handle to the lid. This is really easy. Seriously. Waking up in the morning is harder than that.

The second thing you'll need to do yourself is push the trip tray into place.

That's it. Your new Weber grill is ready for use!

Cooking Power - How Hot Is Hot?

As far as cooking power goes, the Weber isn't very attractive compared with other options (for example - Coleman's Roadtrip XLE). It has an impressive 12,000 BTU on a single burner - but that's the problem: it is a single burner.

For comparison sake, the Coleman boasts two 10,000 BTU burners - almost twice the cooking power for almost the same price.

Now, the 12,000 BTU will get you a long way as far as grilling hamburgers go, and it's ok for brewing a cup of coffee, but that's about it. Forget about creamy sauces, pan dishes and the rest of the more serious cooking.

But hey - look on the bright side - you'll be able to make delicious pancakes!

Weight - How Portable Is Portable?

There's no easy way to say it. The Q 200 weighs 41lbs. That's quite heavy. The grate itself weighs a bombastic 25lbs.

Before you start looking for a different grill to buy, remember that the Q200 costs so much because it is made of high quality materials. The grate is cast iron, meaning it is heavy duty and is not likely to give up on you. Being cast iron it is also very easy to clean - another plus.

What Else Do You Need To Know?

Buying a portable grill, you need to educate yourself as much as you can beforehand. There are a few brands worth their cost out there, and decision can sometimes be difficult.

This article gives a taste of what you need to look for, but you'd probably want to look at additional factors. For example the types of accessories you can get with your grill.

Weber Gas Grill Replacement Parts - All You Need to Know

Having the right knowledge about Weber gas grill replacement parts will potentially save you a lot of money if your Weber ceases to work properly. There are several key parts of a Weber that are more likely to fail than others, and these include the burners, cooking grids, rock grates, heat shields, and valves. There are also several other parts, but these are the most likely to fail.

The burner is a hollow, tube-like structure that has inlet holes and numerous outlet ports throughout its body. It is the part of the grill that produces the heat for cooking and is most often in the shape of a capital H. Other popular shapes include ovals, figure eights, and other shapes. Most grills only have one burner, but some of the higher end models can have as many as four individually controlled burners.

Due to the positioning of burners on the bottom of the grill, meat drippings pose the biggest problem to the. The moisture and acids in meat drippings are very corrosive and can cause the burners to rust over in one to five years.

The cooking grid (or grate), the surface where the food is actually cooked, is another part that may need replacement. Chrome-plated steal grids are the cheapest and shortest lasting of the grids. Porcelain-coated cast iron and steel grates are mid-range types of grids. Stainless steel grids are the most expensive, but they will last the longest and they typically come with a lifetime warranty.

Another part that commonly needs to be replaced is the part associated with protecting the burner from meat drippings and dispersing the heat. There are two parts that can do this, rock grates and heat shields. On older models, rock grates are metal cases that hold lava rock or ceramic briquettes. These are cheap to replace, but can be heavy. Heat shields, which go by about a dozen different names, are a little more expensive and usually only found on newer Weber models.

Over time, the valves on a gas grill will rust over and begin to fail. Because valves need to be exact copies of the original, they can usually only be obtained directly from Weber. Most of the time when there is a valve failure the grill will be thrown away and replaced.

There are many other parts that may need replacing during the life of a Weber gas grill. Some of the other parts that are cheap to replace include knobs, handles, gauges, and condiment trays. Almost anything can be replaced.

The thing to keep in mind is that most parts can be replaced with after market parts to save a little bit of money. If you purchase after market parts, make sure they meet the specifications set forth in your owners manual.

Replacing a gas grill will be very costly, but finding Weber gas grill replacement parts can save you money and the hassle of buying a new grill. Just having a basic understanding of gas grill parts will help you considerably in fixing your grill.
